Miss Fit...also known as caz, cassie and carolyn!
Inspiration for EKO Sense comes from travel, well-being and lifestyle, so meeting different people that work outdoors along the Cornish coast is always exciting. Cassie also known as Miss Fit is a fantastic example of this and is a lifeguard, personal trainer and pilates guru, and also my Beach Fit instructor.
A typical day lifeguarding at Gwithian on a busy Summer day…so how does it go?
Well it is pretty busy from start to end with many hundreds of people flocking to the beach on a busy summer’s day however every day can be different. We have to be vigilant at all times and we all work closely together as a team, ensuring safety at all levels, We rotate to being up a the lifeguard hut, down on waters edge and in the sea doing water patrol. On the average busy day we could be doing anything from treating weaver stings, to minor first aids to assisted rescues and finding lost children as well as ensuring safety for bathers / water users at all time.

Gwithian gorgeousness...
On real busy days or when there is surf and/or if sea conditions are constantly and rapidly changing and/or dangerous or people are not adhering to our advice then rescues can indeed happen. Unfortunately Serious incidents and events can occasionally occur also from spinal injuries to heart attacks to near drownings so we are fully equipped and trained to deal with these too. However, all in a good days work is keep the beach/water users safe and everybody happy which we endeavour to do each day.

Any hazards we should look out for on the beach and in the waves?
Plenty. Although the beach is a fun place to be it can also be a dangerous one. Conditions change all the time so rips, tides, rocks are just some of the things that can be hazardous.
Always swim between the red and yellow flags on a lifeguarded beach.
Always check the tide times
Always read the signs and if you are not sure about anything then ask the lifeguards. We won’t bite!!
Best thing about working on the Cornish coast?
Oh so many things, where do I begin. The beaches, the ruggedness of the North coast, the people, watching the weather fronts come in on the horizon, the surf, the ever changing sea conditions, the beach activities, the shear joy of being located in such beautiful surroundings , the open space, the fresh air, the freedom.
Favourite local beach of 2009 for surfing, relaxing, training and why?
Well I have spent probably the last 4 summers working, training and relaxing on the towans (The stretch between Hayle and Godrevy) so I guess that has got to be my all time favourite, though for surfing I do have a few other real favourite surf spots up and down the coast that I visit regularly.

3 words that describe the inspiration behind what you do?
I …. just Love it!!
OK that 3 words and 1 letter….
So how come Cornwall?
Been coming to Cornwall ever since I was too small to remember and even though we lived just over the border near Plymouth, my family spent a lot of time here. Oh yes and the family roots goes way back to Cornwall so knew I had Cornish blood in me somewhere.
How did Beach Fit come about?
Well I saw a fantastic opportunity right on my doorstep and wanted to offer ladies some inspiration and motivation towards new and exciting fitness goals and challenges. Getting in amongst the elements and using the surroundings of the beach, fields and sand dunes, I wanted to blend the exhilaration of being outdoors with a wonderful combination of fitness exercises and techniques to give the mind and body a real boost.

Last Beach fit evening training at Hayle Towans...and celebrations after an epic sand dunes run!
It is a fresh approach to total body conditioning that’s simple, effective and above all FUN! What better way to enjoy our fitness freedom than by using the feel-good factor created by the great outdoors. Sure beats a boring sweaty hot environment of a stale air-conditioned gym that so many people feel uninspired or uncomfortable in.
Miss Fit words of wisdom
How do we combat the winter blues and stay healthy?
Look after yourself!! So important to eat healthy and avoid over indulgence on those naughty winter comfort foods. Keep active as much as possible and definitely get outdoors if you can each day whatever the weather. It will definitely lift your spirits and brighten up your day. Don’t hibernate, as many of us tend to do in winter. Meet up with friends, try a new class, take up a new sport or even learn something new, a language or something creative. Before you know it will be spring again.
